Besides the obvious loss of function, a study published online yesterday points out something even more compelling: an increase risk of death soon thereafter. The researchers followed 91,134 participants (avg 79yo) for 3yrs. 6.1% died while hospitalized, 14.1% within the 1st 30 days, and 31.1% within the 1st year. In other words, 1 out of 3 patients who were hospitalized for their 1st stroke were dead within a year. So go back and review that list of how to avoid your 1st stroke.
